About WM HAUC

The Highway Authorities and Utilities Committee, HAUC, was established in 1986 by the constituent bodies of the local Highway Authorities and the Utilities.

HAUC UK is the national body that assisted, and continues to assist, the Secretary of State in arriving at and implementing proposals for new street works legislation. The national committee played a significant role in the establishment and implementation of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, the Traffic Management Act 2004 and all subsidiary legislation and associated Codes of Practice.

The national body aims to:-

• advise the Secretary of State on issues relating to legislation
• provide guidance to practitioners
• provide a forum for matters of mutual interest in relation to the street works industry

The national body, HAUC UK, is then supported by ten regional committees who implement national changes and raise issues at a local level.

WMHAUC is the regional committee for the West Midlands region and encompasses fourteen highway authority districts. Committee members meet four times a year and are derived from each of these districts and from each of the utility companies. For details on the highway authorities and utility organisation members please see the Contacts section.

There are two other national bodies that work in conjunction with HAUC, namely:

JAG – Joint Authorities Group comprising representatives of Highway and Transport Authorities

JUG – Joint Utilities Group comprising representatives of all Utility Companies

Further information about these groups can be found from their websites, accessible from the LinksMenu.
